I thought about making a video tutorial, but that would mean I’d have to take this manicure off and do it again, which is just way too much work, so instead I thought I would show you all my absolutely dreadful Photoshop skills with this graphic I drew up in about 15 minutes. It’s so shitty that I spent way more than 15 minutes typing up these more detailed instructions:
WHAT YOU NEED
Base coat. I used Sally Hansen Thicken Up.
Top coat. I used Seche Vite, and you should too, because it’s all kinds of amazing.
Acetone. Normal nail polish remover will work too, but acetone makes cleaning your cuticles/brushes sooo much easier.
A small makeup brush. I use this concealer brush, dipped in acetone, to clean up my cuticles. I also used it to apply some of the franken polishes I made. You could also use a Q-tip for clean up.
A tiny paint brush. Mine is about as big as the smallest brush picturedhere. A striper nail art brush would work great too.
Dotting tools. I used the very tiny end from a set like this.
A piece of wax paper. When doing nail art, it’s a lot easier to have your polish on a wax paper palette than to try to dip your brushes into the actual polish bottle.
CASSADAGA
Paint your yellow-beige base. I mixed OPI Did You ‘Ear About Van Gogh? (nude) mixed with China Glaze Lemon Fizz (light yellow). Let dry.
Using the tiny paintbrush, outline the nail in navy. I used BorgheseMezzanotte Blue.
Clean your brush and use rust-colored polish to draw the pyramids and palm trees. I used Essence The Only Chance! (brown) mixed with H&MBerry Love (red).
Use your dotting tool to create rust polka dot “stars”.
DIGITAL ASH
Paint your entire nail black. I used H&M Manhunter.
Using the tiny paint brush, use blue polish to draw the flowers. I used H&M Peppermint Twist. The flowers are really easy, since even on the album art they’re uneven.
FEVERS & MIRRORS
Paint your entire nail deep red. I couldn’t find mine so I mixed H&MBerry Love (a bright bluish toned red) with H&M Manhunter (black). Let dry.
Using the corner of a makeup sponge, carefully sponge on tiny dots using tan or brown polish. I used Essie Case Study. Doing the actual wallpaper pattern of the album art would be impossible, so this dab technique just creates some texture. Be careful not to get too much polish on the sponge, because you really just want a hint of the tan. Let dry.
Using black polish, draw an oval. I used H&M Manhunter. You can use a small paintbrush or the polish bottle brush. Let dry.
Using gold polish and a tiny paint brush, rim the black oval to create the frame. I used Essence Shiny Godness.
I’M WIDE AWAKE, IT’S MORNING
Paint your entire nail nude or tan. I used OPI Did You ‘Ear About Van Gogh?. Let dry.
Using a darker nude/tan or a light brown and your small paintbrush, draw the building on the left side of your nail. I used Essie Case Study.Make sure the corners meet at about a 60 degree angle, to create perspective. Let dry.
Using brown polish and your small paint brush, create dimension to the building by adding dots (windows) and lines (
Using brown polish and your small paint brush, draw a single short line on the right side of your nail, right along the very edge of your nail. I used Essence The Only Chance! This is your tree trunk.
Using green polish and your small paint brush, use the very tip of the brush to paint the leaves of the tree. I used H&M Hunt You Down. You want to use a stippling technique, so just do very fast, light dots until you have a tree shape you like.
Using a dark red polish and your dotting tool, make a single dot for the sun. I used the dark red franken I used for the Fevers & Mirrors nail.
LETTING OFF THE HAPPINESS
Paint your entire nail orange. I used an unnamed polish from Tiger.
IMPORTANT: put on a top coat. Maybe it’s just the orange polish I used, but it soaked up all the white polish immediately.
Using the tiny paintbrush and white polish, create 4 asterisks: one with the whole asterisk featured on the nail, and three that are partially off the plane of your nail, so only 3 or 4 of the lines will show. I used Sinful Colors Snow Me White.
Using your dotting tool, do various dots of white, red, and green. Make sure your dots are very small. Try to place them in a concentric pattern, starting at the center of the asterisks and coming out.
Finish all nails with a coat of Seche Vite AND YOU’RE DONE!
**PRO TIP: DON’T work with one nail at a time. Do all your base colors first, then stagger which nails you work on so you have some dry time before each step.**
